PhilBoxing.com

Nesty Petecio, 29, of the Philippines lost the gold medal contest to her 20-year-old Japanese rival Sena Eire in their 2020 Tokyo Olympics Women's featherweight final at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, Japan Tuesday.

All the judges had Eire winning after three rounds of contest. Alejandro Barrientos Martinez of Cuba, 29-28; Mariya Kavaklieva of Bulgaria, 29-28; Mohamed Besmi of Algeria, 29-28; Bakytzhan Bekpenbetov of Kazahkstan, 29-28, and Manuel Vilarino of Argentina, 30-27 for a 5-0 unanimous decision victory for the Japanese.

Erie used her jab effectively to pile up points in the first round and resorted to holding when they got close preventing Petecio to score from the inside. All the five judges gave the first round to Erie.

In the second round, Petecio was able to penetrate inside and got the nod of the four judges. The final round was close as both fighters threw caution to the wind. In the end however, Erie won the gold after the five judges gave the third round to her.

Petecio and Erie had three previous meetings with the Japanese prevailed 2-1. Petecio lost to Erie on Mar. 3, 2020 in Amman, Jordan during the Asian/Oceanian Olympic qualifying event and on Apr. 4, 2019 in Bangkok during the ASBC Elite Boxing Championships. She won over Erie during the World Championships on Oct. 10, 2019 in Ulan-Ude, Russia.

Coming to the gold medal round, Erie registered wins over Yamileth Solorzano of El Salvador (round of 32), Khouloud Hlimi of Tunisia (round of 16), Maria Claudia Nechita (quarterfinals) and Karriss Artingstall (semifinals).

On the other hand, Petecio defeated Marcelat Sakobi Matshu of Congo (roundof 32), Lin Yu-Ting of Taipei (round of 16), Yeni Arias of Columbia (quarterfinals) and Irma Testa of Italy (semifinals).

The Philippines has now won one gold medal, courtesy of Hidilyn Diaz from weight lifting, and one silver, courtesy of Petecio. Three Philippine athletes are still in the gold medal hunt: Eumir Marcial and Carlo Paalam of boxing and EJ Obiena (pole vault).
