MARES STOPS GABI! DAVID DIAZ DECISIONS MONTANO! FARENAS TKO'S CARDENAS!

PhilBoxing.com

Unbeaten Mexican Abner Mares stopped Filipino Diosdado Gabi at 49 seconds of the second round after a barrage of punches prompted referee Jay Nady to stop the fight.

Gabi was downed earlier twice, and hard effort by the Filipino to reduce his weight during weigh-in clearly took its toll for the Filipino fighter.

Filipino trainer Rey Caitom of ALA Boxing Gym, who is watching the 'live' airing of the fight at the Norkis Clubhouse, said that Mares is good but his boxer Joseph Omanz of ALA Boxing Gym will give him one tough fight.

WBC lightweight champ David Diaz fulfilled his part of the equation as he prevailed on a majority decision over Ramon Montano over ten rounds.

Diaz was clearly the better fighter against the very durable Montano, but one judge scored it even, eliciting raised eyebrows from boxing fans all over the world.

Two judges had it 99-91 and 97-93 for Diaz, while the third judge saw it even at 95-95.

Diaz now looks forward to a shootout with superstar Manny Pacquiao, that if he beats Marquez.

Filipino Michael Farenas, a protege of Gerry Penalosa and Japan's Kosuke Washio, knocked down Baudel Cardenas twice in the second round, before sending the Mexican again with a low blow in the third round.

Farenas was deducted a point for the low blow, and Cardenas was allowed to take a five-minute breather. However, the Mexican boxer could not get up to resume fighting and referee had to signal an end to the fight at the 2:46 mark of the round.

Farenas was then declared the winner by TKO after the lapse of the five-minute allowable period.

It was Farenas' second win in the United States, and both victories came at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

The fantastic trio made up of Quinito Henson, Chino Trinidad and world flyweight champ Nonito Donaire is doing the commentary from Las Vegas for Philippine television.

Diaz vs Montano non-title up next...

Pacquiao and his team enters the Mandalay Bay as shown on the big screen around the fifth round of the Diaz-Montano fight.

GAB Commissioner Angel Bautista and boxing chief Nasser Cruz, as well as Dr. Allan Recto of Texas are seen on the ringside intently watching Diaz struggle against Montano.

Juan Manuel Marquez enters the Mandalay Bay at round the ninth round of the Diaz-Montano fight. Marquez is accompanied by his trainer Nacho Beristain and promoter Jaime Quintana.
