BOXING PRODIGIES TO WATCH OUT FOR 2021 PhilBoxing.com Fri, 22 Jan 2021 Just like every other sport on the planet, boxing also faced a pretty tough time in 2020. Boxing matches had to be suspended for some time, up until the Matchroom event involving Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin in August 2020. The event happened behind the closed doors, in which the 41 year old Russian delivered a stunning knockout victory over the British heavyweight boxer. The pair had a scheduled rematch on November 21, which had to be postponed as the Russian fell ill. The difficult times of 2020 also had some silver linings, especially with regard to the young prodigies that entertained the fans everywhere. Let’s tell you about 5 such young boxers that everyone should watch out for in the coming year. Edgar Berlanga The new sensation in the super-middleweight division had a phenomenal 2020, scoring 3 knockout wins back-to-back. Edgar presently has a 16-0 record and poses a major threat in this segment. Despite the fact that super middleweight division has another prominent contender in the form of Canelo Alvarez, Edgar Berlanga has everything going good for him to be a legitimate threat to Alvarez. Having had a significant year already, he will undoubtedly garner a lot of attention for his upcoming bouts. Caleb Plant The International Boxing Federation’s champion in the super middleweight category has already announced himself as the best boxer on various social media platforms. It remains to be seen how he performs now in his January 30th bout against Caleb Truax. A lot of betting money would be riding on him, expecting him to deliver on his words. Terence Crawford After having had a major contractual issue with Top Rank of Bob Arum, the in-ring accomplishments of Bob Arum have somehow gotten overshadowed a bit. It’s highly likely that we’ll see the ‘Bud’ become a part of some new promotion soon. It will also be interesting to see how he performs without the Top Rank Promotions now. Ryan Garcia ‘The Golden Boy’, as he’s popularly referred to as didn’t go up against Luke Campbell last year. Therefore, he will need to wait for a shot at the WBC lightweight title. He will first need to win the interim title on January 2nd, thereby kicking off the New Year with a fight to look forward to for the boxing fans. It would be interesting to see if he’d be able to beat the ‘Cool Hand’ or not. Daniel Dubois The heavyweight puncher who is only 23 years old got beaten at the hands of Joe Joyce recently. Even though he continues to be an A-lister, everyone knows that the defeat would have dented the youngster’s confidence. 2021 will be a very important year for Daniel as he will try regaining the top spot and continue putting efforts for heavyweight title wins. |
