Warriors Dominate Spurs for Second Straight Victory
By Jason Aniel PhilBoxing.com Thu, 21 Jan 2021
Warriors rookie James Wiseman (33) dunks the ball during the Warriors vs Spurs game Wednesday in San Francisco.
San Francisco, CA—Building off the stunning 19-point comeback win over the reigning world champion Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors dominated on both ends of the floor to defeat the visiting San Antonio Spurs, 121-99. Debuting their “Oakland Forever” alternate jerseys, the Warriors started red hot in the first quarter. Draymond Green, who is not known as a scorer, “exploded” for seven points early in the first. Superstar Stephen Curry then dazzled the “virtual crowd” faking out the entire Spurs defense with a lay-up and a three-pointer. Warriors surged to a 36-24 first quarter lead and did not look back.
The well-coached Spurs team did not give up and made their run early in the second quarter with Curry on the bench. However, once Curry returned the Warriors expanded the lead to 19 to end the first half. Curry ended the game with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists. Andrew Wiggins continued his consistent two-way play scoring 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Wiggins had a rough first two games of the season but has since scored at least 15 points in every game.
Head coach Steve Kerr made a recent rotation adjustment that has appeared to pay off. Kelly Oubre Jr. now begins the second quarter with the second unit and backed up his 23-point performance against the Lakers with 16 points and 9 rebounds tonight against the Spurs. During the post-game conference, Coach Kerr said, “We won two in a row so we will keep it (the rotation), but it’s a small sample size.”
Rookie James Wiseman had the best game of his young career with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Wiseman was the recipient of several lob passes for easy dunks—a sign of the team’s developing chemistry. Wiseman credits his performance to his growing knowledge of proper floor spacing through constant film study.
The Warriors have a quick turn-a-around with the New York Knicks visiting Chase Center Thursday night.
