MAGSAYO WINS BY SPLIT DECISION AGAINST HERMOSILLO

PhilBoxing.com

Mark 'Magsayo' Magsayo was brought into deep waters by tough Mexican hombre Rigoberto Hermosillo but got the nod from the two judges to win by split decision at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles televised on FS1 Saturday night (Sunday in Manila).

Judge Rudy Baragan gave all the rounds to Magsayo, 100-90; Zachary Young had it 96-94 for Magsayo while Lou Moret gave the edge to Hermosillo, 96-94. Philboxing had it 97-93 for Magsayo.

Magsayo, fighting in a major US television for the first time, connected with the more telling punches stopping the swarming Hermosillo in his tracks on many occasions but like many tough Mexicans, Hermosillo just kept on coming. Hermosillo threw 856 punches to Magsayo's 417, connecting 181 to Magsayo's 136.

It appeared that Magsayo got a little winded during the last three rounds but Hermosillo himself slowed down in the same stretch. Trainer Freddie Roach egged Magsayo to let his hands go and give the best three minutes in the last round but Magsayo obviously lost the sharpness of his punches as time winds down.

What was supposed to be Magsayo's coming out party turned out to be a bit of struggle against the tough Mexican who had lost his last two fights before taking the fight on short notice.

Magsayo returns the favor.

Apparently Roach was not impressed with Magsayo's performance. Asked what's next for Magsayo, the WBC No. 4 ranked contender, Roach said, “We'd love to fight [WBC champion] Gary Rusell Jnr but we need more work in gym.”

Magsayo now improves his undefeated record to 21 wins with 14 knockout while Hermosillo dropped to 11-3-1, 8KOs.

Undercard results:

In a 10-round welterweight battle, Paul Kroll of Philadelphia remain undefeated by outpointing Lucas Santamaria of East Los Angeles with scores of 99-91, 99-91 and 96-94. The two wide scores appeared to be way off as the fight was a lot closer where Kroll rallied to get points in the latter rounds.

The Barrientes twins Chavez and Angel, of Las Vegas, both won their 6-round assignments to improve their individual record to four wins no defeats. Chavez defeated Ivan Valera (3-3-0, 1KO) of Lindsay, CA via unanimous decision with scores of 60-54, 60-54 and 59-55. Angel also won by unanimous decision against Fernando Ibarra (2-4-0, 0KOs) of Fairfaild, CA.
