BRIEDIS ON DORTICOS: “WE ARE FOCUSING ON HIS PUNCHING POWER”

PhilBoxing.com

Mairis Briedis and Yuniel Dorticos give Boxing Monthly an update from their training camps in the latest issue of the magazine ahead of the WBSS Cruiserweight Ali Trophy final at the Arena Riga on March 21.

“We know Dorticos has a really hard punch,’’ Briedis tells from his camp in Riga in a fresh interview with Boxing Monthly. “He’s a very experienced boxer and everyone knows his strengths. Obviously we will be looking for his weaknesses and try to avoid his strong side.

“First of all, we’re focusing on his punching power. Basically, the focus is on his big punches and avoiding them as much as possible by moving around as much as I can to avoid being hit.”

In the interview, Briedis describes his training camp as ‘a bit like being in the army’. The week, except for Sundays with the family, is devoted to a Spartan existence, living with his training partners, running, sparring and preparing his mind for the final for the Muhammad Ali Trophy in the 200lbs edition of the World Boxing Super Series. The goal: “To win it all.”

Cuban Dorticos, living, and training in Miami, expresses respect for his adversary in the cruiserweight decider: “He is a great fighter but he has never faced a fighter like me,’’ says the IBF world champion with the fearsome nickname. “Briedis better prepare himself for war. On fight night, he will come to know why I’m called ‘The KO Doctor’.’’

The full story in Boxing Monthly – where both fighters talk Aleksandr Usyk and Briedis about the dramatic semi-final against Glowacki – is available from the Appstore here and on print from Thursday.

Tickets for the incredible Mairis Briedis vs Yuniel Dorticos Ali Trophy showdown on March 21 are on sale from €29 via bilesuserviss.lv and WorldBoxingSuperSeries.com.

The final will be broadcast live on DAZN in the U.S. Fans can visit DAZN.com or download the DAZN app to their preferred connected device.

The road to Riga:
Mairis Briedis beat Noel Mikaelian on points in his quarter-final in Chicago and stopped Krzysztof Glowacki in Riga via TKO in the third round of a dramatic semi-final. Yuniel Dorticos claimed a points victory over Mateusz Masternak in Orlando and a 10th round knockout of Andrew Tabiti in Riga – a KO that earned the ‘KO Doctor’ the IBF title and ‘Knockout of the Year’ prize across multiple media.

2018-19: Josh Taylor, Super-Lightweight
