CHESS: Caturla rises with crucial win

Filipino Fide Master (FM) Cesar Caturla (elo 2276) defeated Spanish Fide Master (FM) Tomas Serra Olives (elo 2147 ) in 79 moves of English Opening to share 13th place along with 11 others after the eight round of the FIDE World Seniors 2019 Chess Championships being held at the Rin Grand Hotel in Bucharest, Romania on Wednesday.
Caturla, a member of the Philippine team to the 1976 Haifa (Israel) Chess Olympiad tallied 5.5 points in the 65-and-over section.
“It was a complicated position, but somehow I found a winning line,” said Caturla, whose stint is being supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by its chairman/president rep. Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) chair and CEO Andrea Domingo.
International Master (IM) Angelo Young (elo 2288), meantime split the point with Romanian Grandmaster (GM) Mihail Marin (elo 2521) in 99 moves of Leningrad Dutch to raise his totalto 6.0 points. The 8-time Illinois, USA champion Young shares 3rd to 11th placers.
However, the 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. (elo 2427) got unlucky when he met the tournament top seed Macedonian Grandmaster (GM) Kiril Georgiev (elo 2582) across the board in 35 moves of Pirc defense.
In round 9, Young will meet American Grandmaster (GM) Alexander Shabalov (elo 2528), Antonio goes up against Indian International Master (IM) Devaki V Prasad (elo 2226) while Caturla opposite Romanian Fide Master (FM) Sorin Giurumia (elo 2066).-Marlon Bernardino-
