NM Arellano wins GM Balinas executive chessfest By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 15 Oct 2019 NATIONAL MASTER (NM) and engineer Robert Arellano pocketed the top honors in Metro Manila leg dubbed as 2019 Grandmaster (Atty.) Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Chess Cup National Executive Chess Grandprix hled at the Activity Hall, Second Floor Alphaland Makati Place in Malugay Street, Makati City on Saturday (October 12, 2019). The former University of Santo Tomas standout Arellano collected five points on four wins and two draws to win the six-round Open Class A tournament (2000 and above limit rating). Arellano scored victories over Atty. Melzar Galicia in the first round, Florel Cruz in the second round, Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe in the fourth round, National Master (NM) Noel Dela Cruz in the fifth and penultimate round. He split the point with Kevin Mirano (third round) and International Master (IM) Angelo Young (sixth round). Mirano placed second overall with 4.5 points on three wins and three draws. Young who lost to Atty. Orbe in the second round was tied at 3rd to 4th placers with fellow four pointers Stephen Manzanero. Meanwhile, Andrew Sorima ruled via tiebreak the challenger section (1999 and below limit rating). Sorima, tied for first-third places with Gabriel Libre and Michael Renz Canonoy with 4.5 points each.
