MAASIN CITY WINS OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE 59TH SOUTHERN LEYTE ANNIVERSARY BOXING TOURNAMENT By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Tue, 25 Jun 2019 The host Maasin City team defended its overall championship successfully in the recently concluded 59th Southern Leyte Founding Anniversary boxing tournament. During the Finals held yesterday, all five Maasin boxers who entered the championship rounds won gold medals in their respective weight categories. John Patrick Cubena of Maasin City won over Jeffrey Hornes of Hilongos by referee stopped contest in the 40 kg. Junior boys category. Michael Anduyan of Maasin City prevailed over Regie Parilla of Ormoc City by unanimous decision in the 45 kg. Youth boys category. Gil Forzado of Maasin City defeated Kyron Vinas of Macrohon by unanimous decision in the 50 kg. Youth boys category. Shaquel Miole of Maasin City outpointed Rey Ragas also of Maasin City by unanimous decision in the 53 kg. Elite boys category. Romeo Bestudio of Maasin City defeated Efren de Paz of Hilongos by walkover in the 55 kg. Elite boys category. Chris Carlos Emnas of Leyte Sports Academy edged Lemuel Ybanez of Ormoc City by split decision in the 47 kg. Junior boys category. Caasi Salvador of Leyte Sports Academy triumphed over Mark Anthony Sarino of Ormoc City by unanimous decision in the 53 kg. Youth boys category. Regie Ortega of Leyte Sports Academy stopped Jimmy Cannu Jr. of Tacloban City by referee stopped contest in the 56 kg. Youth boys category. Ramil Pingol of Tacloban blasted compatriot Edison Egonio by abandonment in the 50 kg. Elite boys category. Abel Yarte of Hilongos battered Dello Avorque of Tacloban City by referee stopped contest in the 59 kg. Elite boys category. Maasin won five gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Leyte Sports Academy was second with two gold medals. Tacloban got one gold, two silver and one bronze medals to place third. Hilongos was fourth with one gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Ormoc City came in fifth with three silver and three bronze medals. Macrohon was sixth with one silver medal. Padre Burgos had two bronze medals good for seventh. Matalom earned one bronze medal in eighth place. The winners of the exhibition matches were Vincent Entia, John Ryan Epiz, Louie Jay Forzado, CJ Culpa and Aubrey Arcenas (Elite girls) all of Maasin City and Lester Yarte of Ormoc City.
