PACQUIAO AIMS TO BE THE FIRST FIGHTER TO KNOCKOUT BRONER By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Thu, 03 Jan 2019 The 40-year-old Manny Pacquiao wants to become the first fighter to knock out Adrien Broner when they clash for the WBA world welterweight title on January 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada. ?I am not making a prediction, but my goal is to knock out Broner,? Pacquiao was quoted by ESPN. * * * The fighting senator said he is looking for a knockout against Broner. "I have to maximize the opportunity. I forgot how much fun winning a fight by knockout was until I stopped Lucas Matthysse last summer to win the WBA welterweight title. It felt great to win that way and the fans loved it, too, so why not try for it again?" * * * Pacquiao had not knocked out an opponent in 8? years before he stopped Lucas Matthysse on July 15. The Filipino boxing legend hopes that the seventh-round technical knockout in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was just the start of his knockout streak. * * * Broner has three career losses to Mikey Garcia on July 2017, to Shawn Porter on June 2015 and to Marcos Maidana on December 2013, all by 12-round unanimous decision. Broner went to the canvas twice during the Maidana fight but there was no knockout. * * * Pacquiao stressed that the fight with Broner is for purely business not for personal reasons. ?I have nothing personal against Adrien Broner. This fight is strictly business. He is fun. He makes me laugh. He knows how to sell himself and to sell a fight.? * * * Chief trainer Buboy Fernandez said that he is satisfied with the way Pacquiao's training has been going. "I am very pleased with the training camp Manny has had. His footwork, distance and angles are all coming together nicely. When he hits the mitts it sounds like an explosion. I have never felt such raw power." * * * Donnie Nietes wants to face other world champions and big names in his division but emphasized that he is not avoiding a rematch with countryman Aston Palicte. "I?m not avoiding anyone and I?m willing to fight anyone," Nietes said. ?If he became a mandatory challenger, I will face him.? * * * But Palicte needs to prevail first in a WBO title-eliminator match against Puerto Rican Jose Martinez on January 31 in Alpine, California. "I believe it?s better for me to fight in a unification bout against other super flyweight world champions. It?s up to my manager to decide on that,? added Nietes. * * * Former Pacquiao foe Chris Algieri (22-3, 8 KOs) will clash with stablemate Danny "El Gallo" Gonzalez (17-1-1, 7KOs), a rising boxer at The Paramount in Huntington, in Star Boxing's Rockin' Fights series. The two super lightweight fighters will face each other on January 18 at the Hulu Theater at the legendary Madison Square Garden in a featured 10 round bout on the undercard of the WBO world championship between Demetrius Andrade and Artur Akavo. * * * On November 30 Algieri ended a two semi-retirement from the ring, winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Angel Hernandez, before a sellout crowd in Huntington, New York. On June 2014 Algieri defeated the newly crowned WBO junior welterweight champion Ruslan Provodnikov via split decision. On November 2014, he lost by a unanimous decsion to Pacquiao for the WBO welterweight title. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
