RESULTS FROM CEBU: ARANETA FAILS TO IMPRESS IN UD WIN OVER BAUTISTA

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY ? In what was dubbed as an activity fight, undefeated WBC Asia Silver light flyweight champion Christian 'The Bomb' Araneta failed to impress when he could not find a way to land his vaunted knockout punch or dominate his pedestrian opponent Vincent Bautista over eights rounds at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu here Saturday night. Araneta however won by wide margin with scores of 79-73, 79-73 from judges Arnie Najera and Noel Flores and 80-72 from Carlos Costa.

After some posturing in the opening round, the 23-year-old Araneta threw a combination against Bautista who backed against the ropes but Araneta failed to penetrate Bautista's high-guard defense. Araneta continued to look for an opening in the succeeding rounds but Bautista's shell was hard to crack. The Bohol-born Bautista was also looking to time his counters making it difficult for Araneta to open up and unleash his vaunted power punches. The fight evolved into a dull and tactical fight with not too many punches thrown and with neither fighter, especially Araneta, willing to take too much risk and was content on winning rounds by points.

Araneta, whose handlers are planning to put him up with big fights next year, now improves his record to 17 wins with 14 knockouts while Bautista dropped to 5-12-4 win-loss-draw record with 1 stoppage.

Referee Nick Banal raises the hand of Ponciano Remandiman after his win over Vicente Casido.

In the co-feature bout for 6 rounds at junior bantamweight, Omega Gym's Ponciano Remandiman (9-4-1, 4KOs) of Cebu City stopped Vicente Casido (6-2-1, 2KOs) of Dumaguete City in the 5th round. From the third round onward Remandiman dominated Casido with well-timed combinations to the body and head. As Casido faded and continued to receive punishment from Rimandiman, Referee Nick Banal waved off the fight at 1:24 of the 5th round.

Harmonito de la Torre back on the winning column.

Comebacking Harmonito de la Torre (20-2-0, 12KOs), who was stopped by Chinese Yonggiang Yang last July 15 on the Pacquiao-Matthysse undercard in Kuala Lumpur, was back on the win column after defeating journeyman Richard Betos (20-22-2, 7KOs) in their 6-round lightweight encounter. Betos, who at one time was a good prospect, showboat more than fight but survived De La Torre's power punches to finish the fight. All three judges gave all the rounds to De La Torre, 60-54.

Other results:

Promising Carlo Bacaro wins his third pro fight.

Omega Gym promising lightweight prospect Carlos Bacaro (3-0-0, 3KOs) of Cebu City stopped Mel Anthony Ando (1-3-0, 0KOs) of Mandaue City in the 3rd round of their 4-round scheduled fight. Bacaro dropped Ando with a body shot in the 2nd round who beat the count. Ando however refuses to come out in the 3rd round.

Bryan James Wild wins pro debut.

In the opening bout for 4-round Featherweight, debutant Bryan James Wild (1-0-0, 1KO) of Cebu City won by 1st round knockout over Wilbert Rota (0-6-0, 0KOs) of Danao City. Wild stopped Rota with combinations at 1:08 in round one.

The event, dubbed #Kumbati at the Mall, was presented by Omega Pro Sports International (OPSI) and Omega Boxing Gym in association with Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
