Gomez, De Guzman settle for draws in 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 18 Dec 2018 Grandmaster John Paul Gomez and International Master Ricardo de Guzman had draws in their respective matches in the eight and penultimate round of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships (2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup) at the Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati City on Monday. The Bi?an, Laguna ace Gomez split the point with GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran while the Cainta, Rizal native De Guzman settled for a truce with IM Xu Yi of China. Gomez and De Guzman scored 4.5 points each. They share the 17th to 30th places in the men's division along with countryman IM Paulo Bersamina, who brought down NM John Merill Jacutina. GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India, agreed to a draw with GM Amin Tabatabaei of Iran to create a three-way tie for first place along with GM Wei Yi of China, winner over GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan. The triumvirate tallied 6.0 points each. In the women's class, WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda nipped WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam while WGM Janelle Mae Frayna halving the point with WFM Dita Karenza of Indonesia. Fronda and Frayna scored 4.5 points each. They share the 11th to 20th places. After a back-to-back loses, WFM Allaney Jia G. Doroy bounced back in contention by demolishing WFM Doan Thi Van Anh of Vietnam. Doroy, top player of National University Team Manager Samson Go, has now 4.0 points, the same output of WIM Tianlu Gu of China. In the challenger's section, Prince Mark Aquino bested Vince Angelo Medina while Sherwin Tiu toppled Alexis Emil Maribao. Aquino and Tiu tallied 7.0 points apiece and share on top going to the final round.
