De Guzman wins; Nava, Pascua lose in 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships

MAKATI CITY, Philippines ? FILIPINO International Masters Ricardo De Guzman (elo 2357), Roderick Nava (elo 2392) and Haridas Pascua (elo 2442) posted contrasting results in the fourth round of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships (2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup) Thursday at the Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati.

De Guzman defeated International Master Sumiya Bilguun (elo 2497) of Mongolia, Nava lost to tournament top seed GM Wang Hao (elo 2730) of China while Pascua yielded to International Master Nodirbek Yakubboev (elo 2556) of Uzbekistan.

The win raised De Guzman?s total score to 2.5 points good for a tie for tenth to 31st spots.

Nava remains at 2 points the same output of compatriots Grandmaster Darwin Laylo (elo 2438 ) and International Master Marvin Miciano (elo 2354) and three others.

Laylo beat countryman Edsel Montoya (elo 2312) while Miciano toppled International Master Novendra Priasmoro (elo 2438) of Indonesia.

Pascua, on the other hand was stuck at 1.5 points and dropped to 38th to 54th places.

8th seed GM Sethuraman S.P. (elo 2664) smashed countryman 21st seed GM M. R. Lalith Babu (elo 2529) of India to notch 3.5 points and share the lead with 2nd seed GM Wei Yi (elo 2728) of China and 11th seed GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly (elo 2621) of India.

Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia G Doroy (elo 1972) crushed International Master Guliskhan Nakhbayeva (elo 2371) of Kazakhstan to stay in contention. Doroy whose stint here is being supported by National University team manager Samson Go, now has 2.5 points, a good for a share of 8th to 14th place in the women's division.

The top five in the men?s advance to the World Cup while the champion in the women qualifies in the Women?s World Championship tournament.

Vince Angelo Medina (elo 2137), a former National University standout trounced Sherwin Tiu (elo 2093) to grab solo leadership in the challenger section with perfect 5.0 points.

New Zealand based Jun Isaac (elo 1894), one of the oldest among the participants at the age of 75 but still "moving on" for the love of the game, meantime drew with Reign Joshua Vinuya (elo 1923). Jun is the older brother of ex PBA player Leo Isaac. Youngest Woman Fide Master Antonella Berthe Murillo Racasa (elo 1386) nipped Einstein Padua (elo 1757).-Marlon Bernardino-
