'THE BOMB' ARANETA EXPLODES WITH TWO SECONDS TO GO

PhilBoxing.com

MANDAUE CITY, CEBU ? Rising undefeated prospect Christian 'The Bomb' Araneta uncorked a devastating left uppercut that fell former world title challenger Jerry Tomogdan to the canvas like a cut log with two seconds to go in their 12-round WBC Silver light flyweight title fight here Saturday night in the main event of 'Double Rumble' at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

Tomogdan, who was bleeding from the nose, lay unconscious in the canvas for sometime and it took the ring physicians several minutes to revived the proud fighter from Bukidnon. Araneta (16-0-0, 14KOs) thus captured his second regional title belt and announced his arrival to the junior flyweight division.

Araneta was winning the rounds over Tomogdan with his cleaner hits and a couple of times staggered the more experienced fighter but Tomogdan would not go away and still appeared very dangerous. When the scores were read after the 8th round that Araneta was leading widely at 79-73, 79-73 and 78-74, Araneta's corner told him to just box and kill time. The remaining rounds became anti-climactic as Araneta was content on slipping, defending, jabbing and countering when he sees an opening. In the last round, Araneta didn't even throw punches anymore, just retreating and holding Tomogdan to avoid any damage, at the same time smiling as the fight became a little bit comical.

Tomogdan's corner is worried as his fighter is being attended to.

The crowd were ready to leave, knowing who is going to win the fight.

Then, with two seconds before the bell, as Tomogdan became just a bit careless, Araneta, who has been called 'The Bomb' for a reason, exploded with his left fist and the complexion of the arena changed in an instant as Tomogdan lay motionless to the canvas.

When finally Tomogdan (25-10-4, 13Kos) stood up maybe a good 10 minutes later with the aid of an oxygen, only then the crowd breathed a sigh of relief.

Araneta celebrated with his team as the fans, still in awe of what they've witnessed, are looking forward to watch another explosive performance by 'The Bomb'.

Araneta receives his WBC belt from WBC supervisor Damrong Simakajornboon of Thailand.
