It?s a draw for Adrien Broner and Jessie Vargas in New York

PhilBoxing.com

New York - Adrien Broner (33-3, 24 KOs) and Jessie Vargas (28-2, 10 KOs) fought to a Majority Draw at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Both Broner and Vargas fought two different fights in the course of their twelve round welterweight contest in front of 13,964 animated fans.

Two judges at ringside (Eric Marlinski and Kevin Morgan) scored the bout 114-114 overruling Julie Lederman?s card of 115-113 (Broner).

Vargas, a former champ at 135 and 147 pounds won the first half of the fight by virtue of his aggressiveness and ring generalship. He was out-punching Broner who seemed to not find a way beyond his foe?s long jabs. The fighter from Las Vegas targeted Broner?s body early and also went upstairs when the opportunity comes.

But Broner suddenly found his rhythm midway in the bout and let his fists fly against a taller opponent. The former four division titleholder fired body and head shots of his own and exchanged with a willing opponent - bringing excitement to the crowd of nearly 14 thousand.

Broner took control of the championship rounds by finishing up the 10th strong with a flurry of eye-catching punches. He also busted Vargas? left eye that bled as the fight drew to a close.

Punch stats mirrored Vargas? activity when he threw 839 punches to Broner?s 507. But Broner was more effective despite his low numbers, he landed 38 percent (194) to only 24 percent (203) of Vargas.

?I want to thank Jessie Vargas. He?s a two-time world champion for a reason. He came to fight but at the end of the day you all know I beat him. Point blank, period,? exclaimed Broner who was eager for a repeat of the night.

?I would love to fight Vargas again but let?s go back to my town to do it."

Vargas also thought he won the fight and he also welcomed the thought of a rematch against the flashy Broner.

?I thought I won the fight. At the end of the day I can?t argue because I was fighting on the inside of the ring so I don?t know what you saw from the outside. I was landing clean blows,? he explained.

?We went at it for 12 rounds. We can do it again. I?m ready to fight right now.?

Davis finishes Cuellar in 3

In the television opener courtesy of Showtime, Gervonta Davis (19-0, 18 KOs) stopped Jesus Cuellar (28-2, 21 KOs) in the third round of a World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Featherweight contest.

Davis sent Cuellar down in the 2nd with a body shot and then again in the next round with the same shot. Cuellar was back on his feet before Referee Benny Esteves counted him out on both occasions.

Davis who now is a two-time champion at only 23 years of age finished the job seconds after with another knockdown after unleashing a flurry of punches. Esteves stopped the fight immediately thereafter. Time of stoppage was 2:45 of the 3rd.

The new champ expressed his desire to meet Vasyl Lomachenko in the future in his post fight interview.

Charlo ices Centeno Jr.

It was an easy night of work for Jermall Charlo (26-0, 20 KOs) who crushed Hugo Centeno Jr. (26-1, 14-KOs) in only two rounds for an interim Middleweight belt of the World Boxing Council.

After an uneventful opening round, Charlo and Centeno figured in an early exchange with Centeno missing his shots and Charlo connecting with most of them.

A left and right hook to the head from Charlo sent Centeno down and out for the count at the 55 second mark of Round 2.

Referee Steve Willis reached a full 10 count without any sign of recovery from Centeno Jr. who was out on his feet as he went down at the edge of the ring.

Charlo, a former super welterweight champion, remained undefeated at 27-0 and most importantly became the mandatory to Middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.

?It?s been an amazing journey to get here. I?m a two-time world champion. Bring on Triple G (Golovkin). I want that fight.?
