NBA -- Clippers look to ink Williams to an extension
By Joseph Beltran PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Feb 2018
LOS ANGELES --- The Los Angeles Clippers are closing in on a deal to sign shooting guard Lou Williams to a contract extension. According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal is reportedly worth $40 million for four years.
The 31-year old Williams is in the last year of his contract and is making $7 million this season. But his tremendous shooting has made him a covered target as the trading deadline looms tomorrow afternoon. Williams is averaging 23.3 points per game this season, easily the best in his 14 years in the NBA.
It has been an extremely challenging season for the Clippers. They saw Chris Paul depart for the Houston Rockets during the offseason and they traded Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons last week. Despite the change and spate of injuries, the Clippers are in the playoff hunt with a 27-25 record. Keeping Williams in the roster will help that cause.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Williams went straight from South Gwinnett High School in Georgia to the NBA. A second round pick (No. 45 overall), Williams played seven seasons with the Sixers, two with the Los Angeles Lakers, two with the Atlanta Hawks and two with the Clippers.
