The Philippines' last-minute substitute Jerry Tomogdan dropped a one-sided decision to WBC No.1 ranked light flyweight Pedro Guevara in Centro de Usos Multiples, Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico on Sunday morning Manila Time. Guevara won by a shutout with two judges scoring it 120-108 and the third 120-110.

The hometown favorite Guevara was supposed to face WBC champion Ganigan Lopez but Lopez pulled out two weeks ago due to a calf injury. Lopez was at ringside and said he?s just waiting for a date to fight Guevara.

Tomogdan, a 22 year old southpaw, hadn?t the skill or the experience to handle Guevara who was coming off a ten round unanimous decision over Jether Oliva by a shutout in Sinaloa last February 20 and then beat Ruben Montoya by a 6th round technical decision in a flyweight bout scheduled for ten rounds last July 2.

Tomogdan scored a majority decision over Crison Omayao to win the Philippine minimumweight title last March 27 in Iligan City but had earlier lost to Richard Claveras in a clash for the vacant WBC International light flyweight title on December 2, 2015.

With the win Guevara who gave reigning IBF flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero a hard time in an IBF light flyweight title bout on August 4, 2012 which Guevara lost by a split decision.

With the win Guevara improved his record to 29-2-1 with 17 knockouts while Tomogdon dropped to 21-8-3 with 9 knockouts.

Guevara was originally scheduled to battle World Boxing Council champion Ganigan ?Maravilla? Lopez in a rematch but Lopez was forced to withdraw after suffering a severe calf injury.

In the opening round Tomogdan caught Guevara with a hard head-butt that resulted in a busted nose and also made breathing somewhat difficult and although Guevara dropped the Filipino in round 4 but failed to take him out but Tomogdan showed his toughness by absorbing some heavy punishment but continued to fight until the final bell. Guevara who lost the title to Japan?s Yu Kimura by a split decision in November 2015 before Lopez flew to Japan and won the title from Kimura by a majority decision last March and then successfully defended it against fancied Filipino Jonathan Taconing last July.
