AIBA AND WBA PRESIDENTS AGREE ON BOXING PARTNERSHIP By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Wed, 13 Jul 2016 International Boxing Association (AIBA) President Dr Ching-Kuo Wu met World Boxing Association (WBA) President Gilberto J?sus Mendoza in Vargas, Venezuela during the first AIBA Pro Boxing (APB)/World Series of Boxing (WSB) Olympic Qualification Event. The qualifying matches were also open to all professional boxers which AIBA approved during its Extraordinary Congress in June 1, 2016 in Lausanne, Switzerland. The two boxing presidents enjoyed viewing the finals at the Jose Maria Vargas Dome which included four pro boxers from non-AIBA organizations. Both AIBA and WBA have agreed to consider future partnerships covering all aspects of boxing from event organization, boxer management and new championships, to training courses, according to the AIBA website. Earlier, the World Boxing Council and the International Boxing Federaton warned boxers participating in the Olympic qualifying events and the Olympic Games to be penalized and suspended. The World Boxing Organization has yet to make an official stand on the matter. ?This APB/WSB Olympic Qualification tournament undoubtedly marks a step-change for our sport, with all pro boxers able to participate and earn quota places to Rio 2016. The presence of WBA President Gilberto J?sus Mendoza outlines our willingness to collaborate with all organizations that share our values and work for the best interests of the boxers," declared AIBA President Dr Wu. Three professional boxers out of the twenty who registered in the Olympic qualifier gained quota places to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. It just showed topnotch competition where 79 boxers joined to vie for the last 26 Olympic spots up for grabs. ?Ensuring the long term development of our sport is the only thing that should matter, and it was essential to come to Vargas to witness this unique tournament. After thorough discussions with AIBA President Dr Wu, it has become obvious that we need to start working on mutual projects that will benefit boxing and our boxers," said WBA President Gilberto J?sus Mendoza.
