Jonathan Taconing gets another world title try versus Ganigan Lopez on June 11 in Mexico By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Thu, 19 May 2016 Top rated Filipino Light Flyweight Jonathan Taconing (22-2-1, 18 KOs) will finally get his long-desired wish to once again fight for a world title. Taconing will battle for the WBC Light Flyweight championship against reigning Mexican champion, Ganigan Lopez (27-6, 17 KOs) on June 11th in Mexico. This development was relayed to Philboxing.com two weeks ago by Marybeth Taconing, wife of Jonathan, but she requested that we don't publish it until her husband signed the contract. "Sa wakas mabigyan ulit ng chance mapalaban ng world title versus Ganigan." (Finally, he is given another chance to fight for a world title versus Ganigan.) revealed Marybeth earlier this month. Taconing signed the contract to fight Lopez this week. The 29 year-old standout from the Elorde stable is the current OPBF light flyweight title holder. He is unbeaten in his previous nine fights, winning all but one by stoppage. His last bout against fellow Filipino, Jomar Fajardo was a bruising war which was stopped by the referee due to severe cuts that he sustained during that tough fight, he won the bout in the scorecards after the ring officials made the stoppage in the 10th round- a Technical Decision victory. In his first world title fight in 2012, Taconing lost a highly controversial Technical Decision to then Thai champ, Kompayak Porpramook in Thailand. While in the process of pummeling Porpramook in the corner with a barrage of punches, Korean referee Jae Bong Kim questionably stopped the fight due to a cut to the champion which Taconing's camp described as non-critical. The Filipino was also deducted a point from an infraction in the previous round which further dimmed his chances of winning. Lopez is a two time champion of the division, winning the then vacant WBC green belt in 2014 by Unanimous Decision over fellow Mexican Mario Rodriguez. He lost the belt a year later after succumbing to a UD loss to another countryman-Pedro Guevara (July 2015). In March of this year, Lopez traveled to The Land of The Rising Sun and challenged then champ-Yu Kimura of Tokyo, Japan, who grabbed the title belt from Guevara via Split Decision in an upset win in 2015. Unlike Guevara, Lopez emerged victorious via Majority Decision against the hometown champion. Lopez will now be defending his belt against an eager Pinoy pugilist who has been ranked as the number one contender to the crown for sometime now. Jonathan has been training under the tutelage of trainer- Edward Ballaran at the Elorde Gym in Sucat, Paranaque according to Marybeth. "Sana po palarin." (Hopefully, he'll be fortunate.)
