Hornets beat depleted Hawks, 115-100

PhilBoxing.com

CHARLOTTE -- In dire need of a late season push, the Charlotte Hornets got some help from their opponent as the visiting Atlanta Hawks rested all their starters a night after securing the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Kemba Walker scored a game high 21 points while Gerald Henderson added 20 points (9-of-10 field goals) to lead the Hornets to a 115-100 victory over the Hawks at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

When asked if he thinks the Hawks resting their starters ruins the integrity of the game, Hornets' head coach Steve Clifford said, " No, They know their team. They know know the best way for their team to get ready for the playoffs and that is what they are doing."

The Hawks' reserves led by Kent Bazemore kept the game close in the first half by hitting 9 of 16 triples. The half ended 57-52 in favor of the Hornets.
Walker ignited a late third quarter surge by the Hornets, scoring on three consecutive field goals to put some distance between them and the Hawks.

They outscored the Hawks 33-24 in the quarter to take a 96-70 lead. In the fourth period, it was Mo Williams turn and he scored 16 of his 18 points, including 4 triples to put the game out of reach.

Bazemore scored 20 points for the Hawks while Mike Muscala added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Overall, Hawks' head coach Mike Budenholzer was pleased with his back ups. "They played the way we want to play. I'm sure it helps them. It builds their confidence, and it builds their teammates confidence in them. It's great to see those guys execute the way they did."

Coach Clifford said " We caught a break with them resting their guys. I thought our guys did a good job wanting to win and playing through a lot of fatigue."

The Hornets (31-41) moved up to within a game of the eight and final spot in the Eastern Conference which is currently owned by the Boston Celtics (32-40).

The Hawks fell to 55-18.

On Monday, the Hornets will face the Celtics at home while the Hawks will host the Bucks.
