NBA -- Pistons trample Hornets, 106-78

PhilBoxing.com

CHARLOTTE -- The visiting Detroit Pistons went on a ferocious attack mode and easily disposed the Charlotte Hornets, 106-78, on Tuesday night at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

The game was only close in the first quarter, which ended with Hornets up by one, 27-26. After that, it was all Pistons and the second quarter saw DJ Agustin relentlessly penetrating the Hornets' defense.

Charlotte's PJ Hairston hit four triples to keep his team afloat, helping the Hornets to stay within striking distance at the halftime break and trailing only by eight, 54-46.

" We were attacking the basket both on drive ins and post ups'. Pistons' head coach Stan Van Gundy said. " Once we got into the rhythm of the game, I thought we were really, really good."

The Pistons came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, outscoring the Hornets 29-14.

Hornets head coach Steve Clifford said " obviously tonight we had nothing. We had no juice and to guard their offensive energy, you have to be at the top of your game."

Pistons' forward Greg Monroe, who finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds said "Everybody did a good job of just attacking. Everybody was trying to get into the paint and get to the rim."

Hornets' main man, Al Jefferson never got going as he was constantly bothered by an aggressive double teaming. "He's a great low post player, we want to try and get the ball out of his hands" Van Gundy told reporters.
"We just couldn't make shots in the third quarter. For whatever reason, we didn't have it tonight." a frustrated Jefferson said.

The lead ballooned to 31 and in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, it was clear the game was over. The modest crowd started to make a bee line to the exits.

Earlier in the day, the Hornets traded Gary Neal and a 2019 second round draft pick to MinnesotaTimberwolves in exchange for veteran Mo Williams and second year Troy Daniels. Both players, however, did not make the trip for Tuesday night's game.

DJ Agustin and Jodie Meeks both had 18 points for the resurging Pistons. Anthony Tolliver tallied 16 points while center Andre Drummond added 14 points and 9 rebounds.

For the losing team, Gerald Henderson topscored with 17 points, PJ Hairston had 16 points and Jefferson contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The win improved the Pistons' chances for a playoff berth. They are now 21-32, just one and a half game behind the Hornets (22-30) for the eight spot in the Eastern Conference.
