CHICAGO -- Gregg Popovich snagged win number 1,000 as an NBA head coach on Monday night, joining an exclusive club and cementing his place as one of the league's top tacticians.
Popovich reached the milestone after the San Antonio Spurs rallied from a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to beat the Indiana Pacers, 95-93, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Shooting guard Marco Belinelli completed the comeback with a baseline jumper in the final 2.1 seconds to play.
"I've been here a long time and I've had good players. That's the formula. Getting the players is difficult, but I've been fortunate to have good ones. The time, that's the most important element. You have to be around for a while I guess," Popovich told reporters, including the Associated Press, at his post-game press conference.
Now in his 19th season as San Antonio's head coach, Popovich has compiled a 1,000-462 record. Among the other NBA coaches with 1,000 wins include Pat Riley, Phil Jackson and Jerry Sloan.
Tony Parker led the Spurs with 19 points and six assists while Tim Duncan had 15 and eight rebounds. Belinelli finished with 12 and Kawhi Leonard added 10 as the Spurs improved to 33-19, seventh place in the tightly-contested Western Conference.
The Spurs won despite making only 37 of 89 field goals and missing 19 of 25 three-point shots. The Spurs were also outrebounded 50-42 and issued six assists less with 18.
Rodney Stuckey recorded 18 points for a balanced Pacers attacked that saw six players scoring in double figures. C.J. Miles had 13 while Luis Scola got 11. David West, Roy Hibbert and Solomon Hill each had 10.
The setback dropped Indy to 20-33, three games off the eighth and last playoffs berth in the Eastern Conference. (Homer D. Sayson)
