OAKLAND -- They New Orleans Pelicans tried to run with the Golden State Warriors. They simply couldn't.

After a close 35-34 first quarter of play, the defending champion Warriors blew the Pelicans off the Oracle Arena to score a lopsided 123-101 Game 1 victory in their best of-seven Western Conference semifinals.

Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant combined for 53 points to lead Golden State while Draymond Green had an efficient 30 minutes of play which resulted in a strong triple-double effort --- 16 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists.Shaun Livingston and Quinn Cook combined for 21 bench points for Golden State, who made 11 of 27 triples and 44 of 91 field goals overall.

The Pelicans, the No.7 seed in the West who swept the Portland Trail Blazers in the opening round, was overwhelmed by the second-seeded Warriors beginning in the second quarter where the Warriors unleashed a 41-21 run.

"If we can push the tempo and try to get the stuff in transition that's big for us, so that was the key and obviously that starts with stops," Green told reporters after his team's easy romp.

Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 21 points and 10 rebounds but he Jrue Holiday 11 was held to 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting. E'Taun Moore had 15 and Jamal Crawford 14, but New Orleans converted only 42 of 96 field goals and 8-of-25 triples.

Even without their best player and leader Stephen Curry, who participated in the pre-game shoot around, the Golden State Warriors were in championship form on Saturday night as the defending champs ripped the New Orleans Pelicans in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals (photos by Joan Secuya-Medida@philboxing)
