ANCAJAS REMAINS CONFIDENT TO KEEP HIS TITLE

By Epifanio M. Almeda

Belfast -- IBF junior bantamweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas saw for the second time in person his challenger, Irish Jamie Conlan. Jamie is sometimes described as a Mexican because of his fighting style, but he is really from Belfast.

This time, Jamie was doing the mitts with his trainer atop the ring for the televised public workout of fighters battling their respective opponents on Saturday evening, November 18, Belfast time. Belfast is 8 hours behind Philippine time.

The first time Jerwin and manager-trainer Joven Jimenez saw Jamie was in Brisbane last June-July for Jerwin's 2nd title defense against Japanese Teiru Kinoshita. But Joven and Jerwin did not recognize Jamie thinking he was Michael Conlan's trainer. Michael is Jamie's younger brother. Joven and Jerwin even asked Michael to pose for some pictures with them. Michael was then fighting in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Horn event just like Jerwin.

It turned out that Jamie was closely watching Jerwin's ring workout with Joven.

With what he saw in the ring mitts workout, including Jamie's fights on youtube, Jerwin remains confident that he can handle whatever Jamie brings to the ring. But Jerwin does not brag about it. When asked by the TV crew as to his prediction of the Saturday's fight outcome with Jamie, Jerwin, aware of the Irish crowd inching their ears to listen to his answer, simply and humbly said, "I'm not into predicting the outcome of my fights. I'll just do my best to give fight fans the entertainment they deserve".

Well said in a crowd who would be rooting loud for the local fighter. On Jerwin's side are Filipino born Belfast residents Mariano Agsino, Vincent "Banto" Saljay, Alex, Bok and many others whose names escape me now, who have given much to team Ancajas' feeling it is also "at home". Without them, the team would not have the opportunity to see the site where the Titanic was built and to see the city.

These Filipino boxing fans express their pride in Jerwin and Jerwin promised not to let them down. Agsino, in particular, knows his boxing and he follows the career of past and present Filipino fighters.

The support given by Jerwin's Belfast countrymen adds boost to Jerwin's resolve to silence the expected loud Irish crowd come fight night.

The team looks forward to Jerwin's win and looks at it confidently.
