Super-fight on the ropes as Mayweather pokes fun at Pacquiao

The chances of a future mega-money clash between Floyd Mayweather and his career-nemesis Manny Pacquiao look to slim as the pound for pound king heads into the final two bouts of his career.

With fans clinging on to the slimmest hope that Mayweather will agree to fight the Filipino in May or September next year before retiring, ‘Money’ has been dismissive of the fight ever getting to the negotiation stage.

According to Mayweather, Pacquiao is ‘broke and desperate’ and needs to secure a pay-per-view welterweight battle with the American in order to clean up the tax problems that have dogged him in recent years.

In an out-of-the-blue social media rant on Friday, 37 year-old Mayweather posted pictures of Pacquiao being knocked down and out by Juan Manuel Marquez in December 2012, also labelling the Congressman’s PPV pulling power as a joke.

This latest outburst represents yet another example of Mayweather’s unwillingness to engage with Pacquiao in any future contest and will just one more year left in the sport, it is doubtful the encounter will ever happen.

Pacquiao, 35, faces Chris Algieri on November 22 in Macao, China in the latest defence of his WBO crown, but has seemed preoccupied in the build-up, along with promoter Bob Arum, about the possibility of getting Mayweather to agree a fight.

Mayweather has few options left as the scouts for his May 2015 opponent, with Amir Khan and IBF champion Kell Brook eyeing a bout against each other and the likes of Timothy Bradley and Marquez off the table.

That could leave Algieri in a position to make the fight his own with a shock victory over Pacquiao, that could lead to Mayweather seeing the 140lb world champion as an ideal foe for a unification in the spring.
