American trainer Freddie Roach may or may not be in Manny Pacquiao’s corner when the Filipino superstar faces undefeated Mexican Jorge Solis on April 14 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Despite Roach’s recent statement that he plans to fly to San Antonio from Puerto Rico just in time for the Pacquiao fight, reports coming in by the day would suggest that nothing remains definite.
A report, which came out of Ringtalk.com, yesterday hinted that Roach, who’s been with Pacquiao since 2001, may not really make it to San Antonio
Roach has been in Puerto Rico for almost a month now, handling the training of Oscar dela Hoya for the latter’s highly awaited May 5 showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The Ringtalk.com report said Rob Peters, the Wild Card Gym enforcer, felt that everything remains 50-50 since he heard that “Golden Boy may plan a big press conference on the day of Manny’s fight so Freddie may not make it to San Antonio.”
Golden Boy Promotions, owned by dela Hoya, is locked up in a legal dispute with Pacquiao promoter Top Rank, owned by Bob Arum. The two outfits claim to be the rightful promoter of the Filipino boxer.
Peters, who was in Manila when Pacquiao fought and defeated Oscar Larios last year, however, said that Justin Fortune is doing a very good job handling Pacquiao’s training at Wild Card since the third week of March.
