LAS VEGAS ? Back in May, Marcos Maidana landed the most punches of any fighter facing Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather made sure that didn’t happen again in Saturday’s rematch, using his legs more and keeping the fight off the ropes in cruising to a unanimous decision victory over Maidana.
The result, according to CompuBox: Maidana landed just 128 punches over 12 rounds, down from 221 in the first fight.
Maidana also threw 286 fewer punches this time around, and landed just 22 percent overall against Mayweather. (He landed 22 percent in May.)
As has become custom over his recent fights, Mayweather had pinpoint accuracy with his power shots. He landed 102 of 177 (58 percent) against Maidana. He landed 65 percent in the first fight and now has had four consecutive fights in which he’s landed at least 50 percent of his power shots.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. said he wanted his son to emphasize the jab more in the rematch. It was prevalent early in the fight, but Mayweather wound up throwing just 149 jabs, actually three fewer than in his May win.
Mayweather threw 100 fewer punches than the first fight.
