CHICAGO -- The San Antonio Spurs reached another milestone on Tuesday by hiring WNBA player Rebecca Lynn "Becky" Hammon as the franchise's first ever female assistant coach.
The 34-year old Hammon is a 6-time WNBA All-Star who announced on July 23 that she will be retiring at the end of this season, her 16th in the league. Hammon, who currently suits up for the San Antonio Stars, is 7th all-time in the WNBA in points (5,809) and 4th in assists (1,687).
"I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff. Having observed her working with our team this past season, I'm confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs," San Antonio spurs head coach Gregg Popovich told USA Today.
