You are living the life, kid! The sun, the sand, the senoritas of Isla Encanta, the Shining Star of the Carribean, Puerto Rico. Must be nice.
Not to mention the fact that, isntead of 20 pugs, you are only training Oscar De La Hoya and a couple of other guys.
But I do have some questions, my fellow Bostonian. And I also pass along a warning from the Fighting Mayweather Clan. We can talk about Daisuke Matsukaza, the Gyroball, and our beloved Red Sox later.
First, the danger warning. Fresh out of jail on an assault charge and still under suspension by the Nevada commission, Roger Mayweather is talking violently. In fact, Black Mamba is talking about giving you a good slap across the face when he next sees you. Imagine that, it is flashing Code Orange in Mayweatherville already.
Now you know Rajah, as we’d refer to him in Bahston, is not wrapped too tight. Or maybe he is wrapped too tight and that is the problem. I don’t know if Roger is on double secret probation as a result of his recent Clark County Jail stint but is that any way for someone who just got out of the can to be talking?
(True confession: Fredster, I like Roger personally and I bet you do as well. He was a good fighter and, if he quit on his stool against JC Chavez, so what? But, temper, temper, Mamba, or you might get sent back to the hoosegow before your nephew, Pretty Boy Floyd, has his May 5 chance to whup Oscar’s backside. Btw, Rajah is also badmouthing his own brother, you know Floyd Sr., the guy who tries to demean you as Joke Coach Roach.
Classic fussing, feuding, Mayweather familial discord. Rajah hits the bricks from the cooler and immediately starts “dissing” Floyd Sr. (Historical note: remember when Roger fought Vinny Pazienza and, when the fight was over, threw his best punch, a right hand directed at Bullkdog Lou Duva’s jaw? It missed by a smidge.) Which reminds me, what does the poetic Floyd Sr. rhyme with Roger, mayber dodger? And with Mamba, maybe samba. But I digress from the missive at hand.
Look up family unity in your enyclopedia and you will not see the Mayweather family portrait. Which reminds me, Pretty Boy, that your other uncle, Jolting Jeff, despises your right hand man and aide de camp Leonard Ellerbe, but that is a column for another day.
Anyway, Fredster, you’ve got the heads up. If I was you I’d bring Justin Fortune and Macka Foley to Vegas for the Superfight if only as your security team. That pair may ward off all possible out of the ring Mayweather assaults.
Now to my question, Pugilistic Professor. I see where some stenograpapher quotes you as saying “there is a good chance” you might be able to leave Boricualand behind and slip over to San Antonio to work Manny Pacquaio’s corner against Jorge Solis on July 14.
As Theodore Atlas would say, are you fricking kidding me or fricking kidding the world?
Tell me this was just a jab at your archenemy Bob Arum. Tell me this was a verbal dart designed to hurt Top Rank’s San Antonio PPV promotion April 14.
I refuse to believe that you, a Boston boy who has gone Hollywood, is not going to be loyal to the fighter who put you into the big time as a trainer. I mean, Mark Wahlberg, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon…they’re all homies who went to Tinseltown but stayed loyal to their old-time pals…are you different?
Not to say you haven’t boosted Pacman’s career. You and he have been a marvelous team in the gym and in the corner on fight night.
I am sure ODLH, who covets Pacman the way colleague John Chavez covets Salma Hayak, could spare you from the Wilfredo Gomez Gym in PR for one weekend, Freddie.
I believe you to be a loyal guy. I believe you also to be not stupid. You could probably get away with letting Fortune handle this fight with Jorge Solis.
But, as a former fighter, you know how fighters think. If Pacman loses, your absence will be blamed. If Pacman wins but does not impress, Manny may want to pin the tail on you, you big donkey. If Manny wins and shines like new money, he and some of the people around him who don’t like you may get the idea the Pacquaio Express can roll on without Coach Roach. (Not to mention that with a defeat, if your Golden Boys later win the court case with Top Rank, Pacquaio’s value will have sunk.)
Remember years ago, when you fought Joey “Bugman” Phillips? He was an exterminator but you exterminated him. Imagine the headline, though, had there been a shock upset: BUGMAN EXTERMINATES ROACH!
There are people around Pacman that want to see you gone, Freddie. You’re hip to the game.
I refuse to believe you’ll rub yourself out. See you across the alley from the Alamo on April 14, pal.
