Hall-of-fame trainer Freddie Roach believes that the style of upcoming opponent Chris Algieri will not pose a threat to Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao.
According to Roach, Pacquiao?s experience will eventually be too much for Algieri despite the New Yorker?s unbeaten slate of 20-0 with eight knockouts.
?Well his style is a bit of a runner and Pacquiao doesn?t particularly like fighting guys who run too much. Probably, we?ll figure out a way to beat him. It?s not a problem,? said Roach.
Regarding their choice of Algieri as their next opponent, Roach admits they only have few fighters on their list as those supposed ideal foes would not be financially beneficial for their camp.
Mexican tormentor Juan Manuel Marquez, Roach reveals, was asking for $20 million before agreeing to a fifth fight.
Algieri became an instant option for Pacquiao when he defeated another Roach guy, Ruslan Provodnikov.
?The choice is very small. Ruslan was one of the choices, he?s my own guy. His manager wanted the fight to happen, I tried to make that happen but Algieri had beaten him. He?s the number one guy, I guess. Out of options we had, he?s the best guy out there,? said Roach.
Algieri escaped with a contentious 12-round split decision win over Provodnikov to snatch the World Boxing Organization (WBO) 140-pound belt from the Russian fighter.
Meantime, both Pacquiao and Algieri agreed to a catchweight of 144 pounds, which would mean the bout will happen in the welterweight vicinity.
Chances are Pacquiao will stake his WBO 147lb crown for his November 22 outing opposite Algieri which will be held at Venetian Hotel?s Cotai Arena in Macau. ? Solar Sports Desk, with a report from Dennis Principe
