MARVIN Sonsona has shown some inconsistencies in his career. But if a well-trained and disciplined Marvin Sonsona comes into the fight the result are astonishing.
He proved that in his last fight after a third round demolition over former world champion Akifumi Shimoda last Feb. 22 at the Coatai Arena in Macau.
Sonsona?s manager and promoter Sammy Gello-ani hopes that that same Marvin Sonsona will come out on June 7 at the Madison Square Garden in New York to face fellow former world champion Wilfedo Vazquez Jr. in a rematch.
?As long as Sonsona trains well, I?m confident he can beat Vazquez. He asked for this fight and he is preparing well and motivated to give us a good result,? Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu.
Sonsona and Vazquez Jr. fought back in 2010 in Puerto Rico. The 29-year-old Vazquez knocked out Sonsona in four rounds, giving him the only dent in his career.
Sonsona has been unbeaten since his loss to Vazquez Jr.
Vazquez Jr., on the other, has been 5-3, losing to Jorge Arce, Nonito Donaire Jr. and Yasutaka Ishimoto.
Vazquez Jr. is coming off a unanimous decision win over prospect Guillermo Avila.
The 23-year-old Sonsona and Vazquez are fighting for the vacant NABF featherweight crown as the main undercard fight of the main event bout of Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez. Sonsona and Vazquez Jr.?s first encounter was at super bantamweight.
Sonsona is 18-1-1 with 15 knockouts, while Vazquez Jr. is 23-3-1 with 19 knockouts.
