Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao remains the most relevant matchup in boxing and other Las Vegas lessons

THAT Floyd Mayweather is a heck of a fighter Marcos Maidana handed the king of boxing one of his toughest nights, no question. But those who screamed robbery were probably hoping for the upset a little too much. Certainly the wild Argentine threw more leather, but Mayweather?s work was accurate and, the first few rounds aside, far superior to what was coming back.

The validity of Floyd?s claims that the hectic nature of his 46th consecutive victory was a favour to the fans can rightfully be questioned, but what should not be doubted is his quality. The Best Ever? No way. But the best of his time? Probably.

THAT Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao remains the most relevant matchup in boxing We?re sick of wishing, I know. It?s a bit like when I used to bug my parents every single Christmas for a dog knowing full well they would not buy me one. But while I can now see that my eight-year-old self could not have cared for a puppy, hindsight will never reason that the absence of a Mayweather-Pacquiao megafight was good for boxing.

They fight in the same weight class. They are the two biggest names in the sport and the only fighters from the current era who can claim to be among history?s finest. It is farcical that the showdown will not happen, and makes boxing look like a joke when every other sport matches the best with the best.

Both Mayweather and Pacquiao should hang their heads in shame if this nauseating nonsense continues.

THAT Amir Khan has a future at welterweight It?s no secret that the Briton was auditioning for a shot at Mayweather during his bout with Luis Collazo. It was easy to feel sorry for Khan when Floyd cruelly sidestepped his advances and embraced Maidana instead. But as Khan himself pointed out, sometimes things happen for a reason.

Following his decisive victory, Khan has proved that his 12-month layoff may have been a benefit, that his body can cope with boxing?s best division, and his relationship with trainer Virgil Hunter is a good fit, after all. Certainly, more people will be interested in a Mayweather-Khan showdown now, than they would have been a couple of months ago.

Whether Khan secures his dream date is unknown, but if not, there?s plenty more (big) fish in the welterweight sea.

THAT Adrien Broner is an idiot The less said about his foul and disrespectful mouth, the better. He is clearly talented but until he grows up, and that may never happen, his future is in the balance.
