While Quillin-Konecny was one-sided, and Porter-Malignaggi was a blowout, the controversial scoring in the Bernard Hopkins vs. Beibut Shumenov light heavyweight unification fight warrants some analysis.
Interestingly, all three judges agreed on nine of the twelve rounds contested. In fact, judges Dave Moretti and Jerry Roth scored all twelve rounds identically. Judge Gustavo Padilla was the ?lone wolf? in just three rounds, but that was all it took to sway his card Shumenov?s way.
Shumenov won rounds one and two on all three cards. After four rounds, judges Dave Moretti and Jerry Roth had it even 38-38, while Padilla?s card read 39-37 for Shumenov. Hopkins swept rounds five to eight on Moretti?s and Roth?s cards, while Padilla split those middle rounds between Hopkins and Shumenov. So after eight rounds Moretti and Roth had Hopkins ahead 78-74, while Padilla had Shumenov ahead 77-75.
All three judges scores the final four rounds identically, giving Shumanov rounds nine and ten, and Hopkins rounds eleven and twelve, with a 10-8 eleventh round for the knockdown. In the end, Moretti and Roth ended with 116-111 tallies for Hopkins, while Padilla was odd man out finishing with a 114-113 score for Shumenov.
