Many boxing fans, especially those of an older generation, may not be aware of an entire subculture that exists ? internet forums. These are areas on a web site where people exchange opinions. At their best they can be valuable sources of information. At their worst they can be an Idiots Delight, a harbinger for trash talking morons who have no social life. Most sites are a mixture of the two extremes.
In a recent visit to one such site I came across a post, entitled “Juan the Avoider.”
I made the mistake of opening it ? and unwittingly opened a can of worms.
The post claimed that Juan Manuel Marquez was afraid of Manny Pacquiao and would never fight him. It pointed to the contract negotiations with HBO as proof. The poster was Filipino. Gee, who?d have figured?
