During the media conference call for Marco Antonio Barrera vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, which featured questions that could put a speed freak with a sleeping disorder to bed, Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions provided an interesting bit of useless, but interesting trivia.
Little brother Rafael Marquez captured the WBC super bantamweight Saturday night against Israel Vazquez. If old bro’ Juan Manuel Marquez wins the WBC super featherweight championship from Marco Antonio Barrera, it will mark for the first time in the history of the WBC that brothers hold championships at the same time.
Dan Rafael, of ESPN, peppered Juan Manuel with a series of questions regarding the relationship between the brothers Marquez during the media call. Interestingly enough, the brothers have sparred.
“We train to win and we motivate each other” said Marquez on the medial call, “We have sparred, but it has been a long time. Those sparring sessions were wars and my dad finally prohibited us from sparring.”
Just to add icing to the trivia cake, while Marquez was disconnected from the call, Ramiro Gonzalez (top-notch public relations specialist for Golden Boy Promotions) informed media members that this is the 78th meeting between two Mexican champs; Marquez holds the WBO featherweight championship.
