Bautista, Banal end vacation

A WEEK after scoring separate knockout victories last Feb. 24, ALA Boys Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista and AJ “Bazooka” Banal are back to work in preparation for their May 5 fights in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Bautista, who scored a devastating knockout win over Mexican Marino Montiel Gonzales in three rounds and Banal, who finished off former Pan Asian Boxing Association super flyweight champion Komrith Evereadygym in the opening round, are preparing to fight in the undercard of the much-awaited Oscar dela Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. WBC jr. middleweight championship. The fight will be at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

“Rey and AJ are now back in training at the ALA Gym,” Cebu’s foremost boxing patron Antonio Lopez Aldeguer told Sun.Star Cebu.

The WBO No.1 ranked Bautista is scheduled to fight WBO No.2 contender Sergio Manuel Medina in a 12-round WBO super bantamweight eliminator bout that would give the winner a chance to fight for the world title, which will be disputed by current king Daniel Ponce De Leon of Mexico and Filipino challenger Gerry Pe?alosa on March 17 also at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

Both Bautista and Medina parade unblemished ring records.

The Argentinian Medina holds a 28-0 win-loss card with 16 knockouts, while the Bautista has a 22-0 (17 KOs).

As for Banal, who is the personal choice of dela Hoya to fight under his card, promoters have yet to find an opponent.
