Months before his fight against Marcos Maidana, Floyd Mayweather has been exchanging verbal jabs with Amir Khan due to the former’s choice for his next opponent. Khan even said that Mayweather is afraid of him, claimed that the undefeated boxer only chooses boxers he can surely overpower inside the ring.
But now, the retired boxing legend and seven-year undisputed World Middleweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler weighed in on the match-up between the two and suggested that Khan’s statements against Mayweather may be right, the Daily Mail reported.
He also commented on Mayweather’s picky nature when it comes to choosing his opponents.
He said, “I think Mayweather in a couple more fights might even retire because there is no one else out there. [Manny] Pacquiao would have been an excellent fight but I think that has gone out the window because it won’t have the interest it had. That might have been the biggest fight in boxing history.”
Hagler was referring to how Pacquiao’s tainted fight record after suffering losses to both Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez has affected the appeal of a bout between him and Mayweather.
The legendary fighter continued, “He [Mayweather] is at the right time because there isn’t really anyone else out there. He can make all his money and probably walk away from the game. We have seen what has happened with that [Khan]. Even this guy Maidana that Khan beat who he has given this next fight, this is all crazy stuff.”
“With Mayweather, we have got to see if he retires and he hasn’t given Pacquiao a shot or given Khan a shot,” Hagler said. “There will be conversations that maybe he was afraid of them.”
Mayweather’s unified bout against Maidana will take place on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will feature an undercard bout between Khan and Puerto Rican boxer Luis Collazo, according to BBC.
