Mismatch: GGG vs. Lee

Rumors are rife that Gennady Golovkin will meet Andy Lee in April on an HBO fight at the Madison Square Garden Theater?

Chonlatarn vs. Utagalang

??it was a huge mismatch with former world title challenger Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (49-1, 32) swiftly stopping the debuting Harry Utagalang (0-1) in just 3 rounds. Chonlatarn?took out Utagalang with a devastating body?.For fans of body shots this was a beauty.??Gracie Jiu Jitsu Lebanon

Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (alias Chornlathan Onesongchai Gym) sports an imposing 49-1 record and is only 29 years old. This Thai featherweight?s only loss came at the hands of Chris John (47-0=2) in November 2103 in Singapore. Gym has been the WBC Asian Boxing Council featherweight champion since Pad Thai was invented and has defended it close to 30 times. He also holds the WBO Asia Pacific tile and the PABA title. Against John, the WBA super featherweight title was at stake. On February 7, 2014, Gym decided to forego a title fight and took on late substitute and novice Harry Utagalang in a six-rounder in Bangkok. Poor Harry, for whom I could find no information, lasted three rounds before he was dispatched by a vicious body shot. But no wonder as this was Harry?s first fight as a professional. No glory to be had here for Chonlatarn.

Golovkin vs. Lee

?We?re close. We?re talking, and Andy wants the fight. Andy believes he can win, and this is a fight that he wants.??Lou DiBella, Lee?s promoter, told ESPN.com on Wednesday

Not all mismatches are created equal. With Daniel Geale and James Kirkland out of the picture at the moment, rumors are rife that Kazakh wrecking ball Gennady Golovkin will meet Irish Andy Lee in April on an HBO fight at the Madison Square Garden Theater. If so, this will be a higher profile mismatch and will be an ugly one for Andy unless he is fortunate to get waxed by an early GGG sledgehammer body shot. Andy (31-2) is an affable lad and his relationship with the late Emanuel Steward was a marvelous one, but none of that means a thing when the bell rings and the baby-faced cruncher begins to do his crunching .

Andy had a good 3-0 year in 2013 against mediocre opposition, but most will recall his head snapping beatdown at the hands of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at the Sun Bowl in June 2012.

Meanwhile, the active GGG continues to seek and destroy. He has fought 29 times and won 29 times with 25 KOs. He is the current IBO and WBA middleweight champion. He also will cut off the ring on Andy as soon as the bell rings and then, after establishing his appropriate separation, begin to punish and bloody him with jabs. If Lee gets through the first round, he will be met with heavier stuff including body shots set up by hooks upstairs. By now, Andy will realize that his only chance for survival will be to fight this Monster inside but GGG knows this as well and won?t let that happen. Sometime before the bell sounds for round number five, GGG will catch Lee in a corner and unload will non-stop artillery forcing a halt to the butchering?and, by extension, to the mismatch.

The Golovkin fans (me included) will go crazy at the Garden and on Facebook as the legend of GGG builds and as his win total reaches 30, but at some point Team Golovkin will need to think about moving up in weight.
