PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — Young Palawe?os who have great potentials in boxing may just be able to realize their dream to follow the footsteps of Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.
Noting the wealth of talents among his constituents and the desire that the next Manny Pacquiao would come from Palawan, Governor Reyes is set to launch the Adopt-ABoxer Program on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the new Job Training and Recreation Center (JTRC) in the annex compound of the provincial government. People’s Champion Manny Pacquiao himsel has been invited to join Governor Reyes at the launching program.
“The presence and message of Manny himself to the program beneficiaries will surely inspire our young boxers,” Governor Reyes said.
“Palawan has produced boxers who have shone brightly in national and international amateur competitions. This is a good indication, and that is why we are launching a program that will allow us to train potential boxers,” the governor also said.
As envisioned by the governor, the program will provide a wholistic environment for the trainees.
“The beneficiaries will be housed under one roof. I have instructed the Provincial Sports Office to devise a program that will not only provide the athletes the necessary training they need but will also include education, medical and health benefits and allowances,” Reyes said.
Program beneficiaries will get scholarship grants from the provincial government under the JTR Scholarship Program.
The Provincial Health Office will take care of the medical and health needs of the trainees.
The physical fitness and training will be handled by the Provincial Sports Office, through Danny Caabay, silver medalist in the 5th International Amateur Boxing Championship, who is head coach and trainer.
