It’s no surprise Floyd Mayweather couldn’t escape the Manny Pacquiao question on the first stop of a four-city tour of South Africa, even if the answer rarely changes.
Mayweather plans to return to the ring May 3, and all indications point to Britain’s Amir Khan being his first opponent of 2014.
In Johannesburg on Wednesday, Mayweather told reporters that Khan and Marcos Maidana were under consideration for his next fight, and the announcement could come within a week.
But last week, Adrien Broner exercised his rematch clause with Maidana, who won a unanimous decision against him Dec. 14.
Maidana-Broner II could be April 19 or April 26, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Scheafer told ESPN.com’s Dan Rafael, setting up a possible Mayweather-Maidana bout for September.
For now, the focus remains on Khan, who is 28-3 and hasn’t fought since an April 2013 win over Julio Diaz.
Mayweather is due to also visit the cities of Bloemfontein, East London and Cape Town on his near week-long trip to South Africa.
“As far as my last fight with ? I can’t even remember the guy’s name. Canelo! They all the same to me,” Mayweather told reporters. “So, as far as my fight with Canelo, they said Floyd Mayweather’s record could never be broken without the Pacquiao fight and as you have seen what we did, the fight done crazy numbers.” Mayweather’s September victory over Saul “Canelo” Alvarez did 2.2 million pay-per view buys and shattered the record for gross PPV proceeds, with “nearly $150 million” in total revenue.
