It?s good that he?s not fighting. It?s bad that he?s on the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother and speaking his mind.
Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is in the news. It has nothing to do with boxing, profligacy, or having children out of wedlock. Holyfield has made headlines by being politically incorrect.
All opinions are created equal. While handcuffed to 26-year-old actress named Luisa Zissman, Holyfield expressed an opinion that landed him in hot water and to the right of Duck Dynasty.
Zissman makes small talk with the man to whom she is handcuffed.
?Is there any gay boxer?? she asks.
Holyfield says ?Sure,? but looks uneasy. ?Yeah, I?m sure, it is.?
?Is it public like knowledge??
?Ain?t nothing come out.?
?I think it?s really bad that no one says it in the sports industries.?
?What is gonna be good about it?? asks Holyfield.
?I think it?s good to be open like that because it?s normal.?
Holyfield can?t believe his ears. ?But that ain?t normal.?
Sussman starts to explain but Holy interrupts.
?The Bible lets you know, that?s wrong, that?s right.?
?It?s the way some people are born.?
?No, it don?t make no difference.? Holyfield explains, ?If you were born and your leg were turned this way, what do you do? You go to the doctor and get it fixed back right, right??
?It?s not about being fixed. It?s about just being the way you are.?
?No, no, no, no, no, no, no,? says Evander. ?All I?m trying to tell you, you know how handicap people are born? You can?t say because they are born that way you can?t move that.?
The producers of the UK version of Celebrity Big Brother, the same producers that handcuffed Holyfield to a white girl in bed, upbraid the champ for ?unacceptable language and behavior,? while suggesting he ?consider very carefully the effect expressing such views may have and the harm and offense you may cause by repeating these views inside the house.?
In his defense, Holyfield says, ?It is not like I would mention it to anyone else, it was just our conversation.?
A spokesman for CBB thought his defense indefensible: ?Following Evander Holyfield?s comments about his personal views of homosexuality last night, Big Brother spoke to him in the diary room.
?Evander was told that his views weren?t shared by a large section of society and that expressing those views and the language he used could be seen as extremely offensive to many people. He was warned to think carefully about repeating them. Evander understood and accepted this.?
?The producers of Big Brother will continue to monitor this and will take further appropriate action should a similar matter arise again.?
Celebrity Big Brother may celebrate the national surveillance state, but it wasn?t supposed to resemble The Twilight Zone.
