Last weekend, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. were scheduled to meet with reporters at the Super Bowl to further promote their May 5 pay-per-view clash in Las Vegas. De La Hoya never made it to the meeting because he was upset over Mayweather “ambushing” him last Friday during a radio interview with trash talk and negative comments. He described it as a Mayorga moment, referring to when Ricardo Mayorga hurled constant personal insults during the press tour for their 2006 bout.
BoxingScene.com scribe Tim Smith reports that Mayweather, Jr. blasted De La Hoya over the no-show at the media meeting. Mayweather said that it was no surprise that De La Hoya would not pay his father, Floyd Sr., $2 million dollars as a training fee because he considers him to be a cheap person.
?He doesn?t want to be in the same room with me because I put fear in his heart,?? Mayweather said. ?Oscar is a hell of a business guy, but he?s extremely cheap. If my Dad was in my corner, I?d give him $6 million. But he?s not in my corner. Having my Dad as his trainer was his best chance he had of putting up a competitive fight. The two best trainers in the business are Roger Mayweather and Floyd Mayweather, Sr.??
But, he quickly said that De La Hoya never had a shot at beating him, even if he retained the services of his father, and most of the good fighters that De La Hoya fought during the course of his career were old men.
?He never had no shot,?? Mayweather said. ?He?s fought some good fighters, but they?ve all been old. He?s never fought anyone like me, an undefeated fighter in his prime. He?s not fighting an old Pernell Whitaker or Julio Cesar Chavez. He?s not fighting a 40-year-old Bernard Hopkins.??
“Oscar is not for real. He?s plastic. When he came out for the press conference after he fought Mayorga the dude was wearing makeup.? See. I can wipe my face and you won?t see no make up coming off me. I?m for real. I?ll sit here and talk to you and tell you the truth.??
Mayweather was also asked why he refers to himself, at only 29-years-old, as the best fighter in the history of the sport. Floyd gave a detailed answer on why he will go down as the best of all-time.
