BARRING a last-minute change, Oscar de La Hoya is going to tap Freddie Roach as his chief trainer for the mega-buck bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5 in Las Vegas.
“I received a message yesterday telling me that Freddie will be Oscar de La Hoya’s trainer for the Mayweather fight,” said the source.
According to the source, Roach has agreed to work with De La Hoya since training him will not affect his commitment with Manny Pacquiao, who is also penciled to see action during the summer.
“Oscar will train in the evening probably at the Wild Card.”
De La Hoya had been initially asked by current cornerman Floyd Mayweather Sr. to sign him up as trainer for the May 5 clash to the tune of $ 2 million.
De La Hoya reportedly declined to give in to Mayweather’s request and was compelled to look elsewhere with Roach and Jack Mosley, father of two-time tormentor Shane Mosley, as leading candidates.
