FLOYD MAYWEATHER against Amir Khan? Of course Khan is interested, with the promise of “Loadsamoney”. That?s if there is any money left for him after Mayweather takes his cut because I don?t think there will be much interest from the US public in the match up despite what Golden Boy Promotions say.
However, they must know what they?re doing and with the revenue that we generated when Ricky Hatton visited those shores to go the same way ? like most other visiting British fighters – as Khan surely will, you can see what the appeal might be. Also consider the Yanks who will turn up to see another Brit get slaughtered and perhaps it?s a viable proposition after all.
Golden Boy have already started the ball rolling by stating that Khan has something better than Mayweather, and that is his speed (I hope they mean hand speed and not 100metre sprint speed) but even superior hand speed will not be enough if you look at his recent dissection of Saul Alvarez. It?s hard to see how Khan can possibly win.
I think a better option would be a fight against Manny Pacquiao. They both have two losses of late and should Khan somehow pull off the upset, then he could justifiably take on Floyd. If he loses it would more than likely be quickly and he would not have to be punished over 12 rounds like he would against Mayweather.
It was initially reported in Boxing News that IBF bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell and manager Dennis Hobson had signed a promotional deal with Queensbury Promotions. But no, they were wrong. Would you Adam and Eve it, it looks like Judas Jamie has split with Dennis Hobson and signed with Eddie Hearn. What the hell, he’s world champion now so to hell with loyalty and all that s***. It?s that old saying: The grass is always greener.
Hobson got him his world title shot, in his own town, with only enough fans of his to fill the local chippie, and spent a fortune of his own cash in the process, but it was the ultimate manager-boxer relationship, and he got his boy a world title shot in which McDonnell came up trumps. Only naturally Dennis will have thought all that nurturing was worth it. He had created another world champion like Clinton Woods, and he deserved to follow that through like Clinton allowed him to.
I know it?s a tough sport, the toughest in the world, and the fighters deserve rich rewards for their efforts, but for Christ?s sake have some loyalty and don’t bite the hand that has fed you and just spit it out. Because one day you will walk along that same road, slip on that same spit that has not dried, fall on your arse, and Dennis will not be there to pick you up. In fact there will be no one to pick you up.
I know it happens in all walks of life; we had it last week at Leeds Rhinos rugby league club when our assistant head of conditioning suddenly left after about five years being nurtured by our head gee Jason Davidson, and me at the start, and for monetary reasons decided to go to Salford.
