Saturday was supposed to be a big day in the Velez household, Arizona State was playing Notre Dame on the biggest stage, Miguel Cotto was to make an appearance with new trainer Freddie Roach, and Wladimir Klitschko, who seems to bore more and more with each title defense, was finally going to face someone with clout , his ?dream fight? as Klitschko put it. My friends who are also boxing fanatics know not to text, email, facebook, tweet, holler, or send a pigeon to deliver the fight results when I have other engagements that night. Saturday, would be no exception. So, as I finally sit down to watch Cotto, I remember all of the ESPN Friday Night fights in which his opponent Delvin Rodriguez left the ring looking like Rocky Balboa in his defeat to Clubber Lang in ROCKY III. I stated that Cotto looked in shape, and looked determined, something I hadn?t seen in years, and that is when I looked to my cousin and said. ?Hey Bro, this fight is going to be over in less than 20 minutes? . As soon as the opening bell rang, and every second thereafter, I became a little upset, not at Cotto, but my Sun Devils gave the game away just seconds prior, and don?t get me wrong, Cotto looked fantastic, but I think anyone at the level would , considering Rodriguez was a B level fighter, and Cotto was fighting in his back yard. Nonetheless, big shout out to Freddie Roach, and Miguel Cotto hopefully their new partnership produces great things ahead. This new partnership undoubtedly eliminates a rematch in the future with Manny Pacquiao. I start to rewind the DVR to the beginning of the telecast, the fight I?ve been waiting for. I run, get my T-Bone steak, baked potato, and my Red Wine, and hit play. Right off the bat, the ring reminded me of ROCKY IV , and the Drago set up, a packed house, and fans wanting their homeboy to basically pull off a big upset. I have always respected Wladimir Klitschko, and I have respected the fact that he is for sure a Hall of Fame fighter. But , on this night, Klitschko belonged in the Hall of Shame. I understand that you are the bigger , stronger, more intelligent fighter, but what I didn?t know is that you are also the dirtiest fighter as well Wlad. Your constant holding, bending of the arm, and pushing and leaning on your opponent was not only unnecessary, it made for a very ugly fight, so much so that even HBO?s Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman, and Roy Jones, blasted Wlad over and over again. It got so bad for me as a fan first, writer second, that I was actually staring at the bone marrow of my cow instead of watching parts of round 10. Povektkin is a great fighter, but was no match for Klitschko?s jab, elbows, and his holding. If this were the NFL , Klitschko would lead the league in holding after week 1. Kiltschko?s overall dirty tactics, which were allowed by Referee, whom I can?t even remember his name, and he , in my opinion, doesn?t even deserve to be mentioned by name let alone a Google, are causing the young fans of America, to slowly tune in to MMA fights, all across the globe, because, even in that arena of sport, the most boring MMA tussle I?ve ever seen, was more enjoyable than what I saw from Wlad. The heavyweight division is cloudy at best right now, and I don?t see anyone outside of Wilder or Arreola that can give him any kind of challenge. He is a not get hit first type fighter, and will do whatever he can to keep his titles, and that my friends, will lead to many more nights like last Saturday .Yes he has 63 wins, and yes, he has 51KO?s and yes he has 15 straight title defenses, and has dominated the division for 7 straight years, but at what expense? He is single handedly alienating boxing fans from following this once coveted division. It?s no coincidence that in the last 7 years, names like Mayweather, Pacquiao, Marquez, and Maravilla Martinez have taken over the sport, and it?s all because of one name Klitschko. Has anyone ever really looked at cow bone marrow? It?s quite interesting.
