The ongoing saga of whether or not Floyd Mayweather, Sr. will train Oscar De La Hoya for the May 5 meeting with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. continues.
Floyd Sr. is sticking to his guns for a $2 million dollar demand to train De La Hoya for the fight because Oscar stands to make as much as $30 million dollars from the fight.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told BoxingScene’s Tim Smith in a recent interview for the NY Daily News, that $2 million dollars is out of the question and by Floyd Sr. sticking to such a high demand, he may be looking for a way to get out of training De La Hoya to beat his son.
Schaefer said that the event is about two of the best fighters meeting in the ring, and not about a father vs. son battle.
“He (Floyd Sr.) knows that $2 million is out of the question,” Schaefer said. “But the way that he said it was like this was not a matter of negotiation. He said it was $2 million or nothing. I think this may be his way of getting out of it.”
“When Oscar starts training, he needs to know there are no distractions, no little questions that are cropping up. This is not about a father and son feud, or even a few extra Pay-Per-View sales that would have come because of that story. This is about one of the biggest boxing events in history. This is the Super Bowl of boxing.”
Jack Mosley, who trained his son Shane Mosley to beat De La Hoya twice, would be more than happy to train De La Hoya to beat Mayweather in May. Mosley said that him and Shane can put together a proper plan for Oscar to come out on top.
“I have the energy, ability and know-how to train Oscar to beat Mayweather,” Mosley said. “I’ve got the plan to do the job. I can tell him what he needs to do. I can show him. If I can’t show him, then Shane can definitely show him. He’ll have two people who can advise him.”
Schaefer told Smith that De La Hoya will make his decision next week about who will train him.
