Op-Ed: Manny Pacquiao the Comeback Pound For Pound Champion

Should it happen that Manny Pacquiao is able to defeat Brandon Rios and the winner of Timothy Bradley versus Juan Manual Marquez. If he fights Floyd Mayweather or not he deserves lasting respect. Fanatical nationalism may have turned some people off but his skills were justification for the respect bestowed upon him by his people in and out of the Philippines. Perhaps all great glory comes from fighting to get it back once it is lost. Floyd Mayweather did it when he left prison and signed a multimillion dollar deal with Showtime and with a change in trainers to Floyd Senior altered his style. He wins but the scientific boxer is not as exciting as the Mike Tysons, Jake Lamottas and Manny Pacquiaos of the world. ESPNBoxing: ?When Mayweather was released, he made some major changes in terms of his boxing business. For one thing, he asked his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., to return as his head trainer. They had spent years estranged, and Mayweather Sr. had not been in his son’s corner in 13 years. In another major move, Mayweather cut ties with HBO, the network he had been with for virtually his entire career, to sign a six-fight, 30-month deal worth an estimated $200 million-plus with Showtime/CBS.? It is entertainment in Vegas and lights and glamour and the sporting life. The fight, whether Guerrero or Canelo is anti climatic because all the action has already happened. The press tour, the weigh in, all access, the posing and the noise. Finally as Mayweather all ways claimed it was about the money. For many, Pacquiao has faded from the spotlight. The hysteria has died as if some great disaster has ruined the party and the music stopped when everybody wanted to dance. If politics were as important as boxing he could have lost an election and still been a national hero when he dominated the ring. Old familiar faces are either gone or mitigated to a lower level as two losses seem to have changes the persona of a champion. TheGuardian: ?It says much about Pacquiao’s situation that confirmation of his comeback fight after being knocked out by Juan Manuel M?rquez last December ? against another last-time loser in Brandon Rios in the distant boxing outpost of Macau on 24 November ? has not catapulted his name back into the mix for a showdown with the man he once rivalled as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.? Freddie Roach the once considered trainer version of pound for pound walks a little lighter in the shadows as Amir Khan once a prize student can be seen conversing with Floyd Mayweather an event few would have believed during the boxing cold wars. Conditioning Coach Alex Ariza who was instrumental in moving Pacquiao through the weight divisions will now work with Brandon Rios for his fight with Pacquiao. ABS-CBNews: ?Ariza, a strength and conditioning expert, was instrumental in Pacquiao?s move to lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight ranks. He trained the Filipino using specialized exercises that enhanced the boxer?s explosiveness, balance and dynamic movements, which came in handy against bigger foes like Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya and Anonio Margarito.? It would seem that all maybe lost with a ship filling with water and holes in the bottom but this is Manny Pacquiao not the average fighter. This is the one that had a change in spirituality, entered and has advanced in politics, fights till he wins or is knocked out. Leaves you feeling that not only did you watch a fight but you were in one also. It was not necessary to root for him. If blood was what you wanted and hockey was not on then you watched the toughest little guy the sport has ever seen as he fought his way to pound for pound. Some defeats have happened but if anyone could come back from his losses to get to a Mayweather fight it would be Manny Pacquiao.
