Mayweather Sr. Wants More Money To Train De La Hoya Against His Son

Matthew Smith – All Headline News Sports Reporter Las Vegas, NV (AHN) – How much will it take for someone to go against their own son? For Floyd Mayweather Sr. the price will be right at $2 million. Mayweather says that he won’t agree to train Oscar De La Hoya in his upcoming fight for less than $2 million.

De La Hoya, who Mayweather Sr. has trained since 2000, will battle Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the May 5 super welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand Garden.

Promoters are hoping the bout will be the highest-grossing non-heavyweight paper-per-view to date.

“If they want me to work against my son, then they’re going to have to pay me,” Mayweather Sr. told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “My son and I, no matter what’s gone down between us, he’s still my blood. Hey, I’d work for Oscar if the deal is right, because that’s my job and boxing is just a sport.

“But if you want me to tell you how to beat my son — and I’m the only one who can tell Oscar how to do that — then you need to pay me.”

Mayweather Sr. said he was offered a guaranteed $500,000 for the fight, and an additional $500,000 if De La Hoya wins the bout.

“Let him take his million and give it to someone else,” Mayweather Sr. said of De La Hoya’s initial offer. “It’s not like he doesn’t have the money to pay me. And this isn’t just any fight. And that isn’t just any fighter. That’s my son in there. Good, bad or indifferent, that’s my son.”

Mayweather Sr. added that he doesn’t have any other disputes with De La Hoya and would be willing to work with him in the future.

Mayweather Sr. hasn’t been on the best of terms with his son since 1999 and the two hardly speak to one another. Still, he doesn’t think De La Hoya will give his son much of a challenge.

“All he has to do is stay away from the left hook and it’s over,” Mayweather Sr. said. “But with me, I’ll show Oscar how to land that left. That would change things.”
