Las Vegas, NV – Following Danny Garcia’s win over Lucas Matthysse Saturday night, current IBF Light-Heavyweight Champion Bernard Hopkins told a select few members of the press why Danny Garcia can challenge and compete against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
After the Mayweather-Canelo post fight press conference Hopkins was asked:
“How would Danny [Garcia] do against a fighter that can’t be touched like Floyd Mayweather?”
Hopkins answered, “You gotta be able to touch him to change that.” “Styles make fights. The difference between Danny Garcia fighting Mayweather is his posture. He doesn’t stand square-up.”
“When you get a guy who understands the chess game of why you use offense to make defense, [you will know it’s] because he’s waiting to counter.”
“So Danny did something tonight where he got trapped on the ropes and he used his shoulder and rolled. And then, one time, he did it. He threw 2 or 3 punches that caught Matthysse.” “To be able to beat Floyd, one must understand his style and movements.” “Once one understands why he moves the way he moves, and one will be able to telegraph his movements. To do this one must be able to emulate what he does in the ring. Once one can do this, one can compete effectively against Floyd.”
Hopkins stated that Danny can do it because he showed glimpses of it against Lucas Matthysse.
Is Hopkins right?
Can Danny Garcia, the undefeated, current RING/Lineal, WBC/WBA Jr Welterweight Champion, compete against Mayweather?
He should at the very least be given the opportunity to try and demonstrate he can compete against Floyd.
Does he not deserve this opportunity?
