HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA – The engineer behind many of Golden Boy Promotions bouts, matchmaker Eric Gomez, took a few minutes from his busy afternoon at the Marco Antonio Barrera v. Juan Manuel Lopez press conference to talk with Boxing Confidential.
While the main event for “Fearless”, available on HBO pay per view on March 17 live from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, is set between Barrera and Marquez, Gomez is still diligently working on the under card.
“We sent over the contract for the Demetrius Hopkins – Steve Forbes bout over to The Contender offices today,” said Gomez, “
Light welterweight Demetrius Hopkins (25-0-1, 26 KOs) is also promoted by Golden Boy and was last seen taking a wide decision over Rogelio Castaneda in November. Steve Forbes a veteran of 36 fights, 32-4, 9 KOs, gained notoriety in season two of the Contender, where he lost a split-decision to Grady Brewer in the finals.
Golden Boy has established stars, like Barrera and Marquez, but also has the difficult task of promoting a large stable of young fighters. High profile pay per view events, such as “Fearless”, are wonderful opportunities for youngsters to get television time and feel the hype of a big event.
“We are looking at Abner Mares as a possibility to round out the pay per view portion of the card,” said Gomez.
Abner Mares is an undefeated super bantamweight, 10-0, 6 KOs, hailing from Hawaiian Gardens, California.
